SSY World Oil Tanker Trends - 2002 Volume 2
2002-10-15 - 2002-10-15

Seen it all before?

Oil imports by the key importing economies are down to 2000 levels, there is the threat of war in the Middle East, oil prices are high and a massive volume of tanker tonnage is due for delivery over the next 18 months.

SSY's latest edition of World Oil Tanker Trends (WOTT) examines the current industry climate - where the collapse in oil demand made its mark on tanker rates during 1h02 - in the context of previous downturns. In drawing on historical data, we can see the depth and duration of historical downswings and draw some parallels and differences to today's market.

The most significant influence on the tanker, LPG and LNG markets this year has been lower cargo demand. But while we expect world oil consumption to show some signs of recovery over the next 12 months, volumes of newbuilding deliveries are on the rise. With a tanker order book of more than 20% of the existing fleet, it is currently at its highest level since the mid-1970s. The tanker fleet is predicted to grow by 2% in 2002 and 3.6% next year.

While 2003 is shaping up to be another tough year for annual average tanker rates, the coincidence of rapid (but unevenly distributed) fleet growth with an anticipated recovery in world oil demand and trade growth does imply the potential for greater volatility in spot rates than seen during the first half of 2002.

The WOTT is available from SSY Consultancy & Research Ltd for an annual subscription of

Coaltrans China Conference
2002-09-16 - 2002-09-17 @ Beijing, China

In September 2002, Jonny Maher, SSY Shanghai's chartering manager, addressed the first Coaltrans China conference on the subject of dry bulk carrier market prospects. In order to demonstrate where SSY thinks the market is headed in 2003, Jonny's presentation considered a number of factors including freight rates, global steel production, Chinese dry cargo imports and the growth of the world's bulk carrier fleet. He highlighted the effect of the surge in Chinese coal exports over the last three years on tonne-mile demand in the Pacific, demonstrating how the Korean market, in particular, has been transformed.

The Coaltrans China conference, exhibition and field trip took place in Beijing. The innovative event gave delegates the opportunity to view at first hand China's rapidly expanding coal export industry, now set to overtake South Africa as the world's largest exporter of thermal coal.
