At the 10th anniversary McCloskey European Coal Outlook Conference on May 19th, SSY’s Head of Research John Kearsey outlined the reasons behind the collapse in Capesize freight rates in the early months of 2011 and the preconditions for a sustained recovery in the freight market.

Bunker Fuel Conference in Rotterdam on April 14. His paper reviewed
the tanker and bulk markets and also assessed the impact of rising
bunker fuel costs.
World Sulphur Symposium
Derek Langston, Senior Director of SSY Consultancy, spoke at the World Sulphur Symposium in New York held in April 2011. His paper focussed on the inversion in this year’s freight market which has seen spot market earnings of Supramax and Handysize vessels consistently above those in the Capesize sector.
The first Coaltrans Switzerland conference in March included a presentation by SSY’s Warren Brook on the changing structure of the dry bulk carrier fleet. In particular, he examined prospects in the coal trades for the emerging post-Panamax and small Capesize designs.
Metal Bulletin's China Iron Ore Conference
John Kearsey of SSY Consultancy & Research was among the speakers at Metal Bulletin’s China Iron Ore Conference, held in Beijing on23/24 March. His paper concentrated on the record Capesize newbuilding programme, including Vale’s “Chinamax” vessels of 400,000 dwt.
